Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas - The Doctor And The Devils

The first of Dylan Thomas' film scripts to be published, appearing shortly before his death in 1953.

The play, set during the 19th century, is based on the true story of the infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare, who eventually resorted to murder in order to make money from the supply of bodies for anatomical research.

Thomas addresses the philosophical issues of science and religion as well as the social and political conditions which gave rise to such activities.

Under Milk Wood - Dylan Thomas

Under Milk Wood is a play for radio, later adapted for the stage. A film version, directed by Andrew Sinclair, was released in 1972.

An all-seeing narrator invites the audience to listen to the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of an imaginary small Welsh village, Llareggub ("bugger all" spelt backwards – though re-spelt in early editions as Llaregyb so as not to offend).

They include Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly bossing her two dead husbands; Captain Cat, reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; and Polly Garter, pining for her dead lover. Later, the town wakes and, aware now of how their feelings affect whatever they do, we watch them go about their daily business.

Dylan Marlais Thomas (1914 – 1953) was a Welsh poet who wrote exclusively in English. In addition to poetry, he wrote short stories and scripts for film and radio, which he often performed himself.

His best-known works include the "play for voices" Under Milk Wood and the celebrated villanelle for his dying father, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Thomas died in New York on November 9 1953. The first rumors were of a brain hemorrhage, followed by reports that he had been mugged. Soon came the stories about alcohol, that he had drunk himself to death. Later, there were speculations about drugs and diabetes.
