Television - Dear America

Once I Was was again used against the backdrop of the Vietnam War in Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (1988). Directed by Bill Couturie, this HBO documentary was the winner of two Prime Time Emmys.

Using real letters written by US soldiers and archive footage, the film creates a highly personal experience of the Vietnam War. Voice-overs by many of Hollywood's best actors, including: Tom Berenger, Ellen Burstyn, Willem Dafoe, Robert De Niro, Brian Dennehy, Matt Dillon, Robert Downey Jr., Michael J. Fox, Mark Harmon, John Heard, Kevin Dillon, Harvey Keitel, Elizabeth McGovern, Judd Nelson, Sean Penn, Randy Quaid, Howard E. Rollins Jr., Martin Sheen, Kathleen Turner and Robin Williams.

Roger Ebert commented, "There have been many great movies about Vietnam. This is the one that completes the story."
